The Orleans Audubon Society received a donation of 108 acres of land in
Terrebonne Parish from Mr. & Mrs. Marcel J. Remson. Orleans Audubon also
owns the 86.5 acres Fischer-Orleans Audubon Sanctuary located along the Morgan
River in St. Tammany Parish.
MARGUERITE MOFFETT AUDUBON SANCTUARY
Through a generous donation from Dr. Marcel & Billie Remson of Houma,
Louisiana, Orleans Audubon is now the owner of approximately 108 acres of brackish
marsh and shallow estuarine wetlands in Terrebonne Parish. The new refuge is
located along Highway 56, which borders Bayou Petit Cailou, below Chauvin (south
of Houma). Part of the extensive Lake Boudreaux-Lake Quitman basin, the property
hosts a range of delta wildlife, including furbearers, pelicans, herons, egrets,
spoonbills, ibis, ducks, shorebirds, and estuarine fish and shellfish.
We hope, eventually, to construct a small parking area, a boardwalk, and a
viewing platform so that visitors exploring the lower Terrebonne region can
have a place to get off the highway, stretch their feet, and experience the
delta's rich natural heritage. Indeed, it is our hope that this small refuge
will become a link in the projected Great Louisiana Coastal Birding Trail.
